Coggshall Park Vandalized

Coggshall Park - Stone Building and Gazebo

The Crown Jewel of Fitchburg met with an unfortunate blow at the hands of vandals¦

Tuesday Jan 27th 2009, at 8:00am an early morning walker discovered the smoking remains of a fire in the Stone Building. The roof and entire 2nd floor were destroyed. The first floor that contained the bathrooms and maintenance was intact.

The entire building is roped off at this time, but plans are in place to restore the 2nd floor and roof. Surveillance cameras including night vision cameras will be installed.

After the ice storm, downed trees and branches were scattered throughout the 212 acre park. Recently 200 volunteers met to clean up along with the city’s contracted debris clean up crew. This allowed the Park to open on April 25th on schedule. One more cleanup day is planned for Sunday May 3rd. Residents may bring flowers they can plant. The Park is a special place and one we remember while growing up in Fitchburg.

  Coggshall Park in brief:

This large park, over 250 acres in size, is largely a passive recreation area. It was extensively renovated in 1990, and is cared for by the Friends of Coggshall Park. Its features include a gazebo on Mirror Lake, a stone house facing the lake, a playground, softball field, and plenty of parking and walking trails. Vehicular access is obtained from Electric Avenue next to the Knights of Columbus Hall, and at two locations off Mount Elam Road. The South Street entrance is closed to vehicle traffic.
